A rack-and-pinion (kinetic) log splitter is fast: according to the product pages it splits a log in about 1 second, which suits large volumes of ordinary firewood up to 50 cm long. A hydraulic splitter is slower but pushes with steady force through the whole stroke, so it copes better with long, thick and very knotty pieces. The right choice depends on what wood you split and how much of it. Both types are in our rack log splitters and hydraulic log splitters categories.
How each type works
Rack-and-pinion (kinetic) splitter
The motor spins up a kinetic mechanism; when you pull the lever, a toothed rack driven by a pinion shoots toward the log and splits it on the wedge. The rack then returns to its start position, ready for the next log. There is no hydraulic oil, pump or hoses.
- Pros: very short cycle, simple design, lower weight (83–102 kg for the models in the table).
- Limits: shorter logs (up to 48–50 cm per the product pages) and a single-stroke split; very knotty, twisted wood may not give way in one stroke.
Hydraulic splitter
A pump feeds oil into a cylinder, and the piston slowly forces the wedge into the wood at full force. You can stop the ram at any point and push again. The stroke is slower: on Jansen splitters the downward cylinder stroke takes about 8–12 seconds according to the manufacturer.
- Pros: steady pressure, long logs (up to 110 cm on Jansen vertical models), good results with thick and knotty wood.
- Limits: slower cycle, more weight, hydraulic oil to check and change.
What to look at when choosing
- Force in tonnes. For the models in the table: 10–15 t for rack splitters and 20–22 t for Jansen hydraulics. More force means reserve for thick, hard logs.
- Log length and diameter. If you cut firewood to 25–50 cm for a stove or fireplace, a rack splitter is enough. Long (metre-length) logs need a vertical hydraulic splitter.
- Wood. A rack splitter handles ordinary firewood quickly, dry wood included. Very knotty pieces from forks and the base of the trunk are better split hydraulically.
- Drive. Electric 230 V (quiet, works in a shed, needs a socket), petrol (works away from mains power), 400 V (bigger hydraulic models) or tractor PTO.
- Working position. Horizontal splitting suits shorter logs at table height. Vertical splitting lets you stand heavy, thick rounds up without lifting them. Important: the Jansen HS-20H110 and HS-20H110E work in the vertical position only; the manufacturer does not allow horizontal splitting. The Jansen HS-22A62, for example, can work both vertically and horizontally.

Oil and assembly on Jansen splitters
According to the manufacturer, Jansen hydraulic splitters must be filled with HLP46 hydraulic oil before the first start, and the petrol models also need engine oil:
- HS-20H110: approx. 20 l of HLP46 and approx. 1 l of 10W40 or 15W40 engine oil; delivered dismantled, assembly approx. 3–4 h, at least 2 people recommended (weight approx. 340 kg).
- HS-20H110E: approx. 20 l of HLP46; assembly approx. 3–4 h, at least 2 people; 400 V supply.
- HS-22A62: approx. 9.5 l of HLP46 and approx. 1 l of engine oil; assembly approx. 3–4 h.
- TS-22: approx. 24 l of HLP46; the PTO drive shaft is not included.
Rack splitters have no hydraulic system. On the petrol BT-15B, check the engine oil before starting.
If you split rarely and in small amounts, an alternative is a cone (screw) splitter such as the SKIF DM 2200 or DM 3000: a threaded cone screws into the log and forces it apart.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 15 t rack splitter handle oak?
Ordinary oak logs up to 50 cm long and 40 cm in diameter (the limits of the REMINGTON 15 and BT-15B), yes. For very knotty pieces from forks, hydraulics are more convenient.
Electric or petrol?
An electric 230 V splitter is quiet and needs no fuel, but you need a socket. A petrol unit such as the BT-15B works in the woods or on a plot without power.
Can the Jansen HS-20H110 be laid flat for splitting?
No. According to the manufacturer, the HS-20H110 and HS-20H110E are for vertical splitting only; the horizontal position is for transport.
Do Jansen splitters come with oil?
The manufacturer states that HLP46 hydraulic oil is needed in addition for the first fill (volumes above), plus engine oil for the petrol models.
Warranty and returns?
Splitters are covered by the manufacturer's warranty, and you have 14 days to return them. We deliver within Poland and to other EU countries.
